Course Objectives This course aims to introduce the basic concepts used in the field of health psychology. Research and methodology applied in health psychology research and health-threatening behaviors (such as smoking, malnutrition, excessive alcohol consumption), the effects of stress on the disease, adaptation to chronic diseases, and coping with terminal illnesses will be discussed.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Will be able to define the psychosocial basis of health and illness.
  • Will be able to define the body systems related to the illness.
  • Will be able to explain the factors affecting health behaviors and behavior change methods.
  • Will be able to discuss proven findings on the relationship between stress and illness.
  • Will be able to compare the effects of pain on human psychology, different pain theories and methods of coping with pain.
  • Will be able to explain the causes of health-compromising behaviors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption and sleep disorders and their negative effects on health.
  • Will be able to discuss ways of dealing with chronic, progressive or fatal diseases.
Course Description The aim of this course is to introduce the basic concepts of health psychology which includes illness, adaptation to illness, health related quality of life, health behaviors and basic research methods that widely applied in health psychology.
